Empowering Patients: Navigating Surgical Decisions with Confidence

Choosing to undergo surgery is a significant decision that is often fraught with uncertainty and anxiety. At The Resilient Athlete, we understand the complexities involved and strive to empower our patients to make informed choices about their healthcare journey.

One common concern we hear from individuals facing surgery is feeling as though they lack alternatives or are unsure about what questions to ask. That’s why education is a cornerstone of our approach. We aim to equip our patients with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for themselves, ask critical questions, and seek second opinions when necessary.

While we recognize the importance of surgical interventions in certain cases, we also emphasize the value of exploring all available options before committing to a procedure. Unless it’s a life-threatening emergency, we advise against making hasty decisions in the doctor’s office. Taking the time to gather information, seek additional perspectives, and research alternatives can lead to more informed choices and better outcomes.

To assist individuals in evaluating their candidacy for surgery, we’ve developed the Surgical Seven Checklist. This tool allows patients to assess key factors that may influence their decision, such as diagnostic findings, symptom severity, treatment history, and personal beliefs about the potential benefits of surgery.

The Surgical Seven Checklist:

  1. Scans & tests show contributing pathology

  2. Daily activities are limited due to pain

  3. Symptoms are getting worse

  4. A consistent plan has been followed for a minimum of 3 to 6 months

  5. Lifestyle factors have been addressed (sleep, inflammation, stress)

  6. Less invasive procedures have been ineffective

  7. You believe and are optimistic that surgery will help

While factors like diagnostic results and symptom severity often play a significant role in the decision-making process, it’s essential to consider the broader context. Lifestyle factors, the effectiveness of less invasive treatments, and personal optimism about surgical outcomes are also crucial considerations.

In light of emerging research suggesting that conservative treatments can be as effective as surgery, if not superior in some cases, we believe in empowering patients to explore all available options before committing to a surgical intervention.

If you’re uncertain about whether surgery is the right choice for you or if you’d like a second opinion, we’re here to help. Our team offers free phone consultations to support individuals in making informed decisions about their healthcare.

We encourage you to share this information with anyone who may be facing a surgical decision. By arming individuals with knowledge and resources, we can empower them to take control of their healthcare journey and make choices that align with their unique needs and goals.
